You're probably taking 845,651 selfies and snaps a day,
which means your foundation should be pixel-perfect.
So Estée Stories partnered with Cosmopolitan.com to ask
makeup maven Christine Cherbonnier and our Director of
Global Pro Makeup Artistry Blair Patterson for all the secrets
to getting a flawless base every time—like it was made
just for you by magic foundation fairies.
Go in Layers
The secret to foundation that stays put is ultra-thin coats. "You want layers that build on each other like nail polish," says Patterson. Try applying your foundation with a wet makeup sponge to keep the formula sheer and lightweight. Let it sit for about 30 seconds, and then repeat until you get the coverage you're looking for.
Mix in a Glow
Here's your trick to finding a natural-looking sheen: Blend your favorite foundation with face serum that's packed with super-hydrating hyaluronic acid. "It makes you glowy, not shiny," says Cherbonnier. A classic duo that gets a great mix of coverage and dewiness: Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II + Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup.
For flawless coverage, Patterson says to start applying foundation at the inner part of your cheeks around your nose and move outward from there. "This puts more product in the center of your face where you tend you have more discoloration, and sheers it out up toward the hairline." Bonus: You won't get makeup caked in your baby hairs.
Blur It Out
Cushion foundations are super-buzzy right now and with good reason. Patterson says these formulas go on sheer to blur out your complexion rather than truly cover it, so it's not so obvious that you're wearing foundation. A handheld stick like Double Wear Nude Cushion Stick Radiant Makeup enables you to dab and blend it on in seconds—perfect for busy mornings.
Conceal Like a Pro
To get your concealer and foundation to blend seamlessly, here's the rule Cherbonnier lives by: For red blemishes, avoid highlighting them by applying concealer first, then patting foundation over top, she says. For your under-eye area, apply foundation, and then dot and blend concealer on top. It'll help make your eyes look brighter and more awake.
Find Your Match
Cherbonnier says the key to finding your perfect foundation shade is to swatch multiple colors on your jawline and go out in sunlight to see which one truly blends in with your complexion. Or make it easy on yourself and head to an Estée Lauder counter where a trained pro can help. For example, our iMatch Shade Finder is a high-tech gadget that "reads" your face to help find your exact hue. (Psst…our online questionnaire can help, too.)
Extend Your Blend
Ah, that telltale line of demarcation along your chin and jawline. Here's how Patterson says to curb it: After you're done applying your foundation, take your tool of choice (brush, sponge, or fingers) and blend down toward your neck. You don't want to add more product when you do this—you're just smoothing the edges of what's already on your face or tool so it fades into nothing.
Stop Stressing About "The One"
Finding a single foundation that meets all your needs and then some sounds like a worthy goal, but sometimes it's actually better to have a few that you can count on for different needs. You know, like fragrance wardrobing, but for your face. This way you can mix them together for a truly perfect shade all year 'round or create a custom finish.
Now, go forth and take all the flawless selfies you want—no Facetune or filters needed.
